It’s a lovely thing: the prospect of high speed Internet access while you’re flying over the Atlantic. I know I want it on my iPhone, that’s for sure. But up until now, that dream has yet to be truly fulfilled. Aircell hopes to change that.

For their next big upgrade, Aircell will be utilizing LTE 4G technology as their next-gen choice. This will greatly increase the speed of Internet access for those with wi-fi enabled devices like laptops and cell phones, making watching hi-definition movies, playing multi-player games–in-flight World of Warcraft, anyone?–sending instant messages and more, feasible.

Aircell currently provides in-flight services to airlines such as Virgin America and American Airlines. And while their current service, Gogo Internet, delivers, it’s not lightning speed. 4G should change that, but without the service commercially available anywhere, it’s hard to say how it will measure up. All we can do now is wait and see what the future holds.
