TeleNav are no strangers to these pages, being responsible for the GPS navigation systems offered on several networks. Now the company has announced their turn-by-turn navigation app for the Android platform: from February 24th, T-Mobile G1 users will be able to get voice and on-screen guidance, millions of regularly updated POIs and 2D/3D mapping on their smartphones. Android Community have an exclusive pre-release review, complete with a full gallery and video demo of TeleNav in action.

Addresses can be entered direct, or searched for either by voice control or using the G1’s hardware keyboard. Alternatively, TeleNav offer a browser plugin for your desktop computer, which lets you highlight an address and send it straight to the phone. Android Community found voice recognition a little glitchy, but the plugin works great, as does TeleNav’s whole online portal.
For all the details – including mapping options and all the different points-of-interest categories – check out the Android Community review. The TeleNav Navigation app will be available from the company site from February 24th, then from the Android Market later on this year; there’s a 30 day free trial, after which it’s $9.99 per month.

I don’t see the point of having an application with more visuals if the gps on the g1 does not work. Ask anyone with a g1, the gps locator cannot tell you your position, ever. I love my phone but these gps problems are frusturating…
$9.99 per month when $99 could get you a decent GPS with no monthly fees and I can talk om my phone while I’m being directed.
I am so dissapointed with g1, first the sell you on certain features, but once you actually get the phone, and get past the learning curve, you realize the apps aren’t “that great” now you find out you have to pay an extra 9.99 to be told where to turn, when all the other phones do it for free!!!! This is absolute bs, and I wish I didn’t betray my trusty blackberry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
