I really like my iPhone, but I have said many times that I am no fan of the AT&T network. In my more rural area, the 3G connectivity is non-existent once you leave major roadways and the EDGE connection isn’t much better.

Many iPhone 3G users have been blasting AT&T over slow network speeds since the device launched. Boy Genius Report has conducted its own speed tests to see just how fast the network is in some major population areas like NYC. The speed test shows download speed of 38kbps. Seriously?!
That was the worst speed the publication saw in testing, the best speed was 384kbps. The tests were performed using an iPhone 3GS and a Blackberry Bold. So much for thinking big cities had lots more network speed than we do in rural Texas.
Update: BGR had its readers test speeds and it seems reader results were better than the publications own testing. The average download speed recorded by readers was 933kbps and the average upload speed was 180kbps.

I made this video comparing the iPhone’s speed on AT&T’s network vs. using it on a mobile router called the Mi-Fi on Sprint’s network. The results are embarrassing for AT&T.
