AT&T has been making a lot of adjustments lately to better suite the direction in which consumers are going. The latest bit of info we have heard about AT&T is the idea of having the same OS on every handset they offer. Now far be it for me to say that this is an absolutely ridiculous idea, but it just cannot be done.
My guess would be Windows Mobile devices lining the walls would chase many customers away. I know that I would rather have a cheap feature phone than go that route. AT&T expects that by the year 2014, a very large portion of the mobile market will be comprised of smartphones. You know AT&T always trying to simplify things; they want to make it easier to get applications on all of their handsets.
It looks like AT&T is eying Symbian as “a very credible and likely candidate†to fill this position. Where does that leave Google’s Android? While we enjoy the largest OS on the market today, you have to think about what users you would be loosing. There are thousands of Windows Mobile, Palm and BlackBerry fans out there that would gladly pay the Early Termination Fee (ETF) to get their OS back. The bottom line is you can’t control such a large thing. If AT&T is going to focus their business in the wireless industry, sinking that portion of the business is not a good first step.
