The official announcement for the BlackBerry Bold, or the BlackBerry 9000, just dropped in a press release from RIM. The BlackBerry Bold is RIM’s first 3G enabled device. That in itself is worthy of such anticipation, but this device does not hold all this hype for nothing. This device represents a lot of firsts for RIM, some of them have been a long time coming.

The BlackBerry Bold features a lot of new and exciting features, such as a 480×320 display. The display is described as amazing. In fact, during the demo of the device, it kept coming up how bold and brilliant the display was. The name brilliant was tossed out the window, but Bold stuck. The device features quad band GSM and tri band HSDPA. This thing will work on most GSM and 3G networks around the world. The BlackBerry Bold, has one of the fastest CPUs found in a smart phone today. 624MHz of raw CPU power. This is double the power of previous BlackBerries.
The design of the BlackBerry Bold is completely redone. It is no longer gloss plastic, and the keyboard has a total re design as well. Though RIM compares it to a modernized BlackBerry Curve keyboard, it is pretty much agreed on by most it is more like an 8800 keyboard than anything. The back plate of the device will be interchangeable, and will come in several colors.
As far as media, RIM is taking a step in the right direction. Though the camera is of the 2 megapixel variety, the device boats several other features. It supports up to 16GB MicroSD cards, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As a BlackBerry, it also has the obligatory BlackBerry Internet Services.
RIM says that the device will be made available this summer. They would not say what carrier the device will launch on here in the U.S, but if you guess AT&T, I would have to say you are right. The device will sell subsidized for $300-$400, so to get in on the BlackBerry Bold action, you better bring some serious coin to the table. Here is a shot of the device from the side, to hold you over until it is available.
