Broadcom today announce their latest mobile TV chip, which has the honour of being the world’s first single-chip 65nm receiver. Snappily named BCM2940, the chip has a dual-mode demodulator and tuner and thus supports both the DVB-T and DVB-H mobile TV standards, as well as reducing power consumption and space demands by 40% and 30% respectively.
The Broadcom chip supports the VHF III, UHF IV and V bands, as well as the EU/US L-bands, and integrates 4Mb MPE-FEC SRAM to handle DVB-H parallel/consecutive streams and services. Compatible interfaces include SPI, SDIO and USB 2.0, and the company boasts that the BCM2940 has “everything required to receive an RF signal and to output digital TV”.
Samples are currently doing the rounds among device manufacturers, so while Broadcom intend to officially launch the BCM2940 at the Mobile World Congress, it shouldn’t be too long before we see handsets announced that use the chip.
