CES 2008: WNC unveil Android-ready open-source smartphone

While right now Wistron NeWeb (WNC) Corp’s Linux-powered phone – as shown off at CES Uncovered – is being called the GW4, what you’re really looking at is one of the first Android handsets to be publicly revealed. Currently running a basic version of mobile Linux, it was confirmed to PHONE Mag by several people that not only is the GW4’s hardware capable of running Android, they’re definitely going to be loading the Google-developed cellphone platform onto it later this year.

So what can we expect? Well, a 2.5-inch QVGA touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth and WiFi for a start, as well as a 2-megapixel camera and a body that our man James Allan Brady described as “by far the lightest QWERTY I have ever had in my fat little hands.”
