Was I too harsh with the Couple-IT concept? They’re design justification, remember, was that people don’t necessarily want the ultimate in convergence, and that in fact are better served by task-specific devices; now, research consultancy firm In-Stat have found that yes, users do often prefer multiple gadgets and that the shift to convergence device adoption is unrealistically perceived by manufacturers pushing their latest toy. Before Alloy (who designed the Couple-IT) celebrate too much, however, In-Stat clarify that the device loyalty refers to older technology, e.g. combinations of devices that have a proven track record for them. Their findings showed that many more users than have switched to converged devices are, in fact, choosing to carry redundant gadgets.
In fact, only 8-percent of frequently-travelling US “road warrior” users surveyed have given up their landline in favour of a single cellphone number. In-Stat conclude that manufacturers must address battery life, usability and ergonomics before the push for convergence can continue.
Interesting stuff, but In-Stat want $3,495 to read the rest of the report, and I’ve spent all my money on milkshakes and cellphone top-up cards.
