Nokia N93 shooting videoDroplet Technology Inc. launched their Personal Mobile Video service [pdf link] at CTIA today, promising an all-software way for cellphone users to edit VGA/30fps video footage on their device, even if it lacks dedicated video processing capabilities.  Consisting of handset and server clients, the software is apparently compatible with Windows Mobile, Symbian, BREW and Linux, and will run on the devices from multiple manufacturers (including Nokia, Samsung, HTC, Motorola and HP).

“Being able to capture full-size and full frame-rate video on your cell phone, mash it up with music, graphics, photos, and other videos, and then upload it to the Web or send it to a friend, on-the-fly, is already quite an achievement, but having it all processed through software without the need for any specialized video processing hardware is phenomenal”John Ralston, President and CEO of Droplet Technology Inc.

Droplet is apparently in talks with various “mobile video service providers” - which could include operators, specific websites, or hardware/operator partnerships, the company isn’t telling - to begin releasing the software in the second half of 2008.  They’re also discussing their new browser-based video player, which would circumnavigate users needing to convert video footage to mobile device-friendly formats.

Open APIs for anyone wishing to adopt Droplet’s standards will be available.
