Mozilla’s mobile browser Fennec was originally to be developed for Windows Mobile and Linux, but now it looks like Symbian S60 will be getting this long awaited browser after all. This is a very wise decision for them as there are thousands of Symbian users that would be more than happy to download and sue Fennec as the default browser.
The reason for this decision is the large market share that Symbian has. Symbian makes up about half of the smartphone market today. Moreover the organization behind Symbian has given a hand to Mozilla to aid in the development of this mobile browser for all Symbian S60 handsets. Some of the companies that are currently developing Symbian applications have shown great interest in collaboration.
Due to technical or licensing reasons, Fennec won’t be available for the iPhone, BlackBerry or Android handsets. Apparently we will see Fennec demonstrated on Symbian at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Fennec will be ready to open full pages by the end of April. It appears that many of us will be on our next phone by the time this gets pushed to handsets so choose wisely.
