We generally stick to hardware rather than software here at PHONE Mag, but developer Tong Ren’s FlipSilent app for S60 phones is so cool that I had to mention it. Basically, Ren’s software hooks into the accelerometer inside certain S60 handsets – check out the full list after the cut – giving you the option, should you receive a call you don’t want to accept, to reject it by turning the cellphone face down onto the table.

So why is this cool? Well, for a start it’s all about interacting with your cellphone – in fact, any item of personal electronics – in a more naturalistic way. It’s also a concept that was featured in Nokia’s Touch demo video, as a potential new feature for the upgraded version of S60 due out soon(ish). I can remember a lot being made of the news that the iPhone would have an accelerometer, and the automatically flipping screen orientation still prompts cooing.
It’s a free download, and apparently supported by the N95, N95 8GB, N82 and N93i handsets
