Much to the relief of conservationists, disposable cellphones – i.e. handsets which you buy when travelling, use the minutes preloaded onto them and then bin (or return for partial recycling) – have never really caught on in a major way. That hasn’t stopped designer Vadim Kibardin from coming up with this disposable phone concept; called Freedom Phone, Vadim envisages the sparse handset being sold with 60, 100 or 200 minutes and its own temporary number.

Since we needn’t be too realistic when we’re penning concepts, Vadim has also decided that the Freedom Phone would recharge in a mere 10 minutes. Appearance-wise, it reminds me of one of those LED credit-card sized torches that were initially cool but soon became used as promotional fodder with company logos slapped all over.

More importantly, the absence of a display and the lack of delineation around the keypad buttons could readily lead to some mis-dialled numbers – not a good idea if your prepurchased time is running out.
