Apple’s 1.1.3 iPhone update was, for those who like to Jailbreak their handsets, the most painful so far – with new assisted-GPS, video lyrics and multiple-recipient SMS, it’s arguable the most tempting of the incremental software advances the company has released. Thankfully a new Jailbreak solution has been developed, available for both Mac and PC owners, which allows you to not only use Apple’s latest iPhone functionality but install unofficial third-party software too.

Apparently unlocked handsets continue to work with any SIM after being Jailbroken, and no data is lost in the process. You’ll need an iPhone running firmware versions 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, and that has already been through the Jailbreak procedure, so anybody who has already upgraded to 1.1.3 (or who has bought an iPhone recently with the latest software pre-installed) will have to downgrade first.
The patch modifies an official Apple download of the 1.1.3 firmware, adding Installer.app and Jailbreaking it, then that is flashed to the iPhone and a reboot triggered.
