To keep up with the competition and driving forces of technology, LG recently disclosed the news that a cameraphone with a 12 megapixel sensor is on the horizon. Will we soon see the day when your Professional Digital Camera can phone home to say you’ll be late for dinner?

Like the Sony Ericsson Idou that was unveiled during the Mobile World Congress, LG are thinking that consumers will jump for the phone; as the UK Head of Marketing, Jeremy Newing states “if you’ve got two equal cars then you’ll obviously go for the one with the bigger engine.” Bigger may not be better, though, as “it’s important that people realize when taking 12MP images, they’ll be using huge amounts of data, and it will be more difficult to do things like send such files.”
LG believes that to say with the market, the 12 megapixel cameraphone is essential to their product line. Notwithstanding, I’m old school. I look at a phone to make phone calls, enough SMS to make my thumbs hurt, take the occasional photo of random skulduggery around the neighborhood, retrieve email and fire up my maps when I’m lost. I will be very excited to see the quality of images available through a phone with a 12 megapixel camera. My questions straight up are whether a phone can house a lens suitable to take 12MP that are worthy of printing. I might play it safe with my trusted Digital SLR beast by my side, for now.
