Majority of Drivers text and read email while driving

The only thing more nerve racking for me than riding in the car with my wife driving, is riding in the car when she drives while she tries to text. I see people all the time trying to text and drive, typically weaving all over the road.

A new survey from CarGurus was published recently and it claims that of the 2,881 polled, 52% say that they have used a cell phone to read/write email or text while driving in the last year. A study published in July found that truck drivers who text and drive have a 23% greater chance of an accident while driving.

“Most consumers would agree that texting and emailing while you drive is dangerous. I was surprised to see that the majority of respondents admitted to distracting themselves from driving,” remarked Langley Steinert, CEO of CarGurus. “Clearly this is not a small problem, but rather a widespread trend. It’s encouraging to see that Congress is moving to enact laws to curb this growing problem.”
