Today Nokia announced that the Qt cross-platform User Interface and applications framework will be available under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 license from the release of Qt 4.5 that is set to happen in March 2009.
Qt will now be available in another place over at www.qtsoftware.com. The decision to move to LGPL licensing will provide open source developers with more permissive licensing tools that GPL and also increase the flexibility for new developers in the future. By making the Qt code repositories publically available Nokia hopes to encourage desktop and embedded developer communities to contribute.
Qt 4.5 will also be available under commercial licensing terms with previous versions remaining unchanged. Services for Qt will also be expanded to unsure that all development can access the same levels of support no matter what the license is.
