Nokia: from Gumboots to Laptops

Nokia remains a powerhouse in the cellphone market although may be looking to developing a laptop. CEO of the Finnish Company, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo officially admitted for the first time this week, saying the company was “looking very actively” at the move.

Nokia currently has 128,445 employees in 120 countries with sales in more than 150 countries and global annual revenue of 50.7 billion euros and operating profit of 5.0 billion as of 2008. The company started back in the early 20th Century making galoshes, moving over to telecommunications in 1922. This move could be inspired by the success of Apple in the mobile phone space. Thus having a presence across the mobile universe and offering laptops as companion devices. The shift would push the Company across the divide in the marketplace.

The difference between a ‘phone’ and a ‘laptop’ is becoming smaller by the day. Speculation regarding the appearance and features of a Nokia Laptop will be interesting to see. Their phones are available as simply that – a device that makes phone calls, sends the odd SMS and is affordable for anyone. At the other end of the spectrum, Nokia offers luxury phones costing more than my left leg. Dell looks to be crossing to the darkside of the smartphone and Samsung made the move with a laptop last year, so reading that Nokia may do the same is not a surprise. What will surprise me is the features, weight, dimensions, reliability and the ever important; cost.
