Nokia Germany prematurely posted the specifications of the upcoming N96 smartphone – replacement to the battery-bashing do-anything N95 – before whipping them back off again and hoping nobody noticed.  Unfortunately IntoMobile are often to be found trawling regional websites, trying to see which just-off-the-boat handsets they can pick up, and so we now know that the quadband handset will have dualband HSDPA (850/2100MHz), WiFi b/g, Assisted-GPS, a 5-megapixel camera and DVB-H Class C mobile TV receiver.

That camera is blessed with a Carl Zeiss lens and can handle both still images and 30fps VGA video recording; apparently the dual-LED flash can be used during either of those modes.  I’m not sure if the AGPS means the dedicated GPS receiver found in the N95 has been dropped; hopefully not, as while it guzzled power like a greedy trout, it helped differentiate the handset from its iPhone rival.

The N96 has a 2.8-inch, 320×240 display, 16GB of internal memory and a microSD slot, runs the S60 3rd edition Feature Pack 2 OS (complete with Flash Lite 3 enabled browser) and measures 103 x 55 x 18 mm while weighing 125g.  I much prefer the new corporate look to the old N95.  It’ll ship with a 950mAh battery, and physical connectivity includes microUSB and a standard 3.5mm headphone socket.
