Well, it looks like it’s finally over, folks. Yes, I’m talking about the Nokia and Qualcomm patent feud that feels like it’s been going on for the past century. Okay, so really they’ve only been fighting since April of 2007 but it sure has felt like a long time!

But now it’s over without much fanfare. Basically, both sides agreed after only a day of arbitration to to “swap” patents. So, Nokia gets to use Qualcomm’s patents and Qualcomm gets to use Nokia’s patents. Interesting end to the never-ending battle, but hardly has dramatic as I expected. However, the NY Times notes that a part of the settlement required that Nokia enter into a 15-year agreement that requires they pay royalties on all Qualcomm technology they license.

The specific terms of the settlement were not released, though it could mean Nokia will be paying “as much as $400 million in royalties paid to Qualcomm next year.”
