Open-source Linux loving OpenMoko, who first intrigued cellphone tinkerers with their Neo1973 and then caught the eye of GPS fanciers thanks to supplying the OS and building the hardware for the Dash navigation unit, have announced that they’ll be releasing a second version of the Neo handset at some point in March or April this year. According to company president Sean Moss-Pultz, collaborative work such as the Dash will account for a third of OpenMoko’s total revenues in future, with the remainder achieved through open-source cellphones and smartphones.

Our own Linux-aficionado Ewdi took a look at the OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner cellphone while the team were at CES 2008 back in January. He found the interface well designed but wasn’t too keen on the speed of the handset - based around a Samsung System-on-a-Chip - and you can check out the performance in his video.
OpenMoko have not made clear whether this new handset is an altogether fresh design or perhaps the Neo FreeRunner itself.
