Palm webOS 1.2 to add LED notifications and remote app removal

Worth Reading?

YesNo

Palm’s webOS is currently only available on the Palm Pre that is a Sprint exclusive for now. The OS is expected to turn up in other handsets from Palm eventually. Some information on the next version of webOS has surfaced today.

WebOS 1.2 is expected to bring a few new features to the platform including LED notifications. The new feature will allow the gesture area to blink when new messages arrive. The LED notifications will be a feature most users will like.

Another new addition will be the ability for Palm to remotely remove apps form the handsets. This won’t be so welcome. A message found in a system file reads, “Palm had to delete this application from the App Catalog and your device. If you paid for this app, your money will be refunded.”

The part I am stun reading is the part about removal:

‘Another new addition will be the ability for Palm to remotely remove apps form the handsets. This won’t be so welcome. A message found in a system file reads, “Palm had to delete this application from the App Catalog and your device. If you paid for this app, your money will be refunded.”’

Do this means that Palm have access directly to your device? I assume so. If true, and you are on your WiFi behind your firewall you have now invited “Palm” (whoever that really is – hit hacker) into your system via the Pre.

Can someone confirm that this is not the case? If it is the case then I sure hope that someone on the homebrew start working on some encryption since I can turn of my Wifi. However if I turn off my email, txt etc then I should get a standard cell phone and get my privacy back.

Footnote: I am not a conspiracy freak in any shape or form, but data security in my company is my bread and butter.
