Philips have unveiled a cellphone that, as well as a standard li-ion power pack, has a slot for a AAA battery. The second power source adds up to three hours extra talktime, and also acts as a backup to recharge the main power pack once it has been used up. Philips has, bizarrely, decided to call the handset 9@9j, but is yet to educate us on how you should pronounce that.
Stupid name aside, the technology is based on a system called Backupower, developed by Israeli firm Techtium. Battery manufacturer Energizer is also on board, and the Philips 9@9j is apparently the first of many handsets set to be released in Europe using the Backupower system.
The 9@9j goes on sale in April.
