Phone Magazine week in review

It certainly has been a big week in the world of mobile. Though there was many exciting events, RIM without a doubt stole the headlines this week. Not only did the long awaited BlackBerry Bold, AKA the BlackBerry 9000 get official, but we also found out that AT&T would be the first to carry the hot device. Furthermore, we also saw rumored prices and release dates for the new BlackBerry.

That is not all the BlackBerry news this week, not by a long shot. Rumors popped up about a new all touch BlackBerry, the BlackBerry Thunder. The rumors got a little more heat to them a few days later, when the WSJ themselves confirmed the rumors of the device’s existence. The device is rumored to be a life long exclusive to Vodafone and Verizon.

Sidekick fans get some news this week with the release of the scarlet Sidekick Slide. The device has a slide up QVGA screen, a full keyboard, EDGE data, and is available now on T-Mobile for a penny shy of $200 on a new two year contract.

Live pictures of the long awaited Palm Treo 800w showed up this week. The device will have EV-DO Rev. 0 and WiFi. The device looks like some sort of hybrid between the classic Treo keyboard with the Palm Centro’s controls. It is rumored to show up on July 22nd.

Lots of news about cellular networks this week, including news on LTE and WiMAX. Sprint this week announced that their WiMAX network is ready for commercial use. Alltel finally let slip their 4G plans, with the announcement that they intend to choose LTE as their 4G solution. Not one to be outdone, AT&T announced they would be upgrading to HSPA release 7, which will allow speeds of up to 20mbps.

Philips announced two new touch devices this week. The Xenium X800 is an all touch device running a proprietary interface by Phillips. It will have a 2.9 inch 240×400 screen. Next the X-Connect, we do not know too much about this device, other than it is powered by Windows Mobile and has a three inch screen.’

We finish this week in review with some news about Sprint. They posted Q1 results this week, and unfortunately they are not looking good. Over 1 million customers left Sprint in the quarter, and revenue dropped by 9%. Nextel continues to bog Sprint down, now only worth about one sixth of what it was when Sprint bought them in 2005.
