Stantum started off life as manufacturer of the Lemur multitouch music control surface; released under their JazzMutant brand, the Lemur is a large LCD touchscreen that can display multiple faders and control elements and move them simultaneously.  Now, Stantum are opening up that technology to the cellphone business: its PMatrix 3.5-inch prototype is capable of recognising both finger and stylus input, unlike the iPhone and any other device using a projected-capacitive screen, and will do so regardless of nails, water or sweat.

In fact, the PMatrix technology can recognise an unlimited number of contact points.  Stantum will be offering the system on an OEM basis, providing components or licences as appropriate.

My only concern about the Stantum system is the potential price; it’s Lemur control surface is wickedly expensive, hopefully because it’s based around a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD rather than the technology itself.  If the price can be controlled to bring it in line with rival touchscreens, PMatrix could end up a major player in the mobile device industry.
