It might look like a bleached RAZR, but this cellphone is in fact a reference design for what’s being called the first sub-$100 3G Linux-powered mobile capable of video telephony, music playback, high-speed internet browsing and video streaming.  The result of collaboration between NXP and Purple Labs, the “Purple Magic Phone” might have a ridiculous name but the functionality is spot on, and it’s being targeted at developing markets in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

“During the recent holiday period, mobile operators were purchasing entry-level 3G phones for $120 to $145.  Leveraging our Linux technology, the Purple Magic design now enables manufacturers to deliver compelling 3G products at a transfer price below $100″ Simon Wilkinson, CEO, Purple Labs

The handset is based on NXP’s Nexperia Cellular System Solution 7210 for 3G, running Purple Labs’ Linux suite, and is being offered to carriers as a fully-integrated, ready-to-roll product.  It’s powered by an ARM926 CPU.

Purple Labs will be demonstrating the Purple Magic at the Mobile World Congress, so perhaps Vincent will pay them a visit.
