Live in Canada? Fancy some hot, fast HSDPA/HSUPA goodness? Well, Rogers will soon be inviting you to ram high-speed cellular broadband right up your ExpressCard slot, thanks to Novatel Wireless’ Merlin X950D 3G modem.
Capable of connections up to 7.2Mbps downlink and 2.1Mbps uplink, network depending, the X950D is triband HSDPA/UMTS (850/1900/2100) and quadband EDGE/GPRS (850/900/1800/1900) so even if you leave the soft, loving clutches of Canadian soil it’s likely you’ll get an internet hook-up.
Due to be released during the Summer, the X950D ExpressCard will also be joined by Novatel Wireless’ Ovation MC950D HSDPA/HSUPA USB modem, for those of you who prefer to keep your slots free of super-fast connectivity. Both devices also offer GPS functionality too. We’ve actually got one of Novatel’s Ovation USB sticks in the PHONE Mag shack to test out, so expect the review soon.
Software for PCs and Macs are preloaded onto each modem and install automatically when they’re plugged into a computer, which means there aren’t any separate installation discs to lose. No prices or specific dates have been released as of yet.

I visit Canada about 5 weeks a year friom the UK. I use a mobile modem from Vodaphone which hooks up to Rogers while I am out there. As it costs £4.50 per megabite downloaded I am interested to find out if I can put a Rogers sim card in the modem and get e-mails etc a bit cheeper while I am in Canada.
I would be grateful for any information ebven if it is a negative.
