Samsung is hitting the Symbian hard as of late, more specifically the S60 flavor of Symbian. They have announced today a new S60 powered slider, which has affectionately been dubbed the SGH-L870. The device has a extensive feature sheet behind it, just as you would expect from any S60 powered smart phone. While it is not the most advanced device, its high end status can not be ignored.

The L870 is not your run of the mill brushed aluminum feel slider phone. It is running S60v3.2 over Symbian 9.3. The device is graced with a 3 mega pixel camera with a large QVGA screen, capable of displaying 16 million colors. An interesting point in the device is as opposed to being the S60 browser, it is Safari. The thing is, both browsers are based on WebKit, and somewhere someone got confused. My guess is it is the standard WebKit based S60 browser found on current S60 devices.

The feature set is rounded out with FM radio, a music player, USB 2.0 connectivity and MicroSD expansion. It is tri-band, so AT&T subscribers are out of luck. T-Mobile users can grab the device, and enjoy it when it arrives. The phone will be available in August, at an unmentioned price point. It does say the device will be extended to “all regions where GSM is available”. That could mean if we are lucky they will add that critical 4th band.
