It’s great when mobile phone providers offer new software updates that add features and functionality to our phones without charging us more. One good example is the recent iPhone OS 3.0 update that added a plethora of new features to the handset.

Verizon has announced that it is offering a free software update to owners of the Samsung Omnia. The update is available today at the download link after the jump and adds some new navigation capabilities to the device.

The software update adds open GPS capabilities allowing the user to download and take advantage of other navigation services. The software basically GPS unlocks the device so users can use GPS nav software other than VZ Navigator, though Verizon points out that users can still take advantage of VZ Navigator. The update is free.
