T-Mobile USA have launched the Samsung SGH-t349, a messaging candybar handset with a partial-QWERTY keyboard.  Offering a BlackBerry-style 20 key ‘board and XT9 predictive text, the t349 supports SMS, MMS and IM messaging, together with offering web2go access.

There’s also a 1.3-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, and a media player that can handle MP3, AAC and AAC+ files.  Wired or stereo Bluetooth headphones can be used, and storage is courtesy of microSD cards up to 4GB in size.  Samsung also throw in a speakerphone and PIM functionality, though don’t expect high-speed web access because the triband SGH-t349 tops out at EDGE.

Still, it’s relatively slim – at 0.53-inches thick – and the 2.2-inch 176 x 220 display is a reasonable size for the kind of messaging t349 owners might be considering.  It’s available now, priced at a bargain $14.99 with a new two-year contract.

What is most conspicuous about this phone is features it doesn’t seem to have. No mention on the technical specs for 3G support. I thought this was critical for T-Mobile, since they have a deficit of spectrum in so many markets – where is the UMTS 1700/2100? I am hoping to hear it was just an oversight. I am also puzzled over no mention of MyFaves or WiFi/UMA support. I was considering this as a replacement for my trusty Nokia 6133, but I might just hold out to see what comes next.
