Samsung’s original Alias was a dual hinged cell phone that attempted to combine a normal keypad with a full QWERTY keyboard to give the user the best of both worlds. It was a decent phone, but it didn’t rock anyone’s boat too much. There had been rumors Samsung was releasing a followup, and it has now been confirmed through some leaked photos and diagrams of the device. The simply named “Alias2″ features a dynamic keyboard, possibly with e-ink displays within the keys that change depending on the function currently being used.

The keys will show a normal keypad when opened in portrait mode, but when the phone is open in landscape mode, the keys will shift to displaying the QWERTY keypad.
Engadget is speculating that due to the lower price point of this device, the keys will most likely be less expensive LCD displays seen in Universal Remotes. Either way, this is an interesting change to the standard keypads, and I’ll be waiting to get my hands on this device and try it out.
