Sharp unveiled a new LCD for mobile phones at SID today called the Memory LCD. Sharp claims that the new screen offers a new standard in ultra-low power consumption for graphic displays. The LCD uses built-in pixel memory, high reflectance, and ultra-thin mechanicals for new possibilities in mobile phone design. All that marketing speak means the LCD is thin and will allow phones to be thinner as result.

The Memory LCD on display at the show is a 1.35-inch monochrome Square model. Sharp says that the Memory LCD line will eventually include different sizes and color screens in addition to the monochrome.
The big claim for the Memory LCD is that it sips power needing only 15 µW compared to 1mW screens on the market currently. The display has a very thin design only 1.4mm thick. The thin profile is achieved by using a new two-glass design. The panel needs a 5V power supply and a 3-wire serial interface that eliminates the need for external chips.
