Although Sony Ericsson’s decision to brand the new G700 and G900 cellphones as “touchscreen organisers with broad appeal” does seem to conveniently avoid that other touchscreen cellphone which many find appealing (mentioning no names, of course), we’ll give the duo the benefit of the doubt. SE are keen to suggest that the 2.4-inch touchscreen on each are not merely there for technology’s sake (or for keeping up with the Jones’), but add practical value to the numeric keypad and otherwise standard handset chassis. So, both the G700 and G900 have Post-It-style sticky-notes which you can write directly onto, phonebook and image gallery browsing with finger-control, and the ability to doodle maps and drawings and then MMS them to friends & family.

Still, there are also dedicated hardware keys for the camera, for messaging and notes. The G700 has a 3.2-megapixel camera while the G900 goes better with a 5-megapixel version boasting touch autofocus and multi-shot function; photo editing can be done directly on the camera itself. The G900 also has WiFi, and both it and the G700 are UMTS 2100 and GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 for high-speed mobile browsing.
Both the G700 and G900 will be available in Q2 2008. Whether the “soccer-mom” audience Sony Ericsson admitted they were targeting will go for the G700 or G900 remains to be seen, but we’ll have hands-on video for you by the end of the day.
