Demand for high-end Sony Ericsson cellphones may be slowing, but there’s a whole heap of interest still in their XPERIA X1 smartphone. Much of the detail is known, and we’re still waiting for hands-on reports of longer-term use than just playing with the device at a trade show, but Sony Ericsson have thrown another fact-filled tidbit in our direction courtesy of their developer site: the X1’s white paper.

In it we’re treated to such gems as the fact that DLNA-compatible wireless media sharing will be enabled via WiFi or ActiveSync, that it’ll record video in MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264 (though the US model will lose that last one, and drop a few fps for H.263 recording) and that Google Maps - complete with real-time traffic, driving directions, POIs and GPS - is preinstalled. However I’m hoping it’s an mistake that only Internet Explorer Mobile is loaded; it seems strange considering Sony Ericsson’s own Z770i will come complete with Access’ NetFront.

The eye-catching XPERIA Panels have been defined as follows:
- Sony Ericsson Panel - news weather, finance, world clock, weather, and app shortcuts
- Media Experience Panel - multimedia consumption and navigation
- Slideshow Panel - slideshow of recent videos and pics
- Microsoft Today Panel - standard Windows Mobile Today screen
- 3D Fish Panel - Aquarium with 3D fish
- Custom Panels - user customized
There’s also microSDHC support, push-email via Exchange and JavaME, although some users will be disappointed to note that it lacks support for the 1700MHz band. Anyone else as excited about the X1 as I am?

Probably the best feature is GPS which I use on a daily basis! And I love it!!!

Waoo, once there were rumors that Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will be late but good to see this device on time. It carries best features in all competitive devices.

Finally a Windows Mobile device that isn’t missing a feature. 800×480 Display resolution is awesome, finally a device that can view webpages properly and display all your information on the Today screen.
128 Megs of Ram is also great and should be the minimum on any Windows Mobile device, no more looking at your memory.
It’s got Bluetooth, WiFi GPS, even IRDA.
The size is decent. Personally I’ve never been a fan of hardware keyboards. I wish they had an X model (without the one) that was idendical but without the keyboard which would make it even slimmer. Still unless something like that comes along before it’s release, I’m looking forward to picking up this device.
The only thing I hate is that it looks like it will use the same touch panel technology as all the other Windows Mobile devices. Not that it’s bad but it’s definately not as finger friendly as the type of screen used in the iPhone, and some LG phones. If it had that kind of screen, it would absolutely be an Iphone killer.

I currently have the W810i, and I love it. But I can’t wait til they come out with the Xperia. Any clues on how much it will run? Id like to get it on an upgrade under my plan, which means I’ll prolly have to pony up a few extra bucks. Has anyone heard anything yet?
