It seems odd, but it’s taken Sony Ericsson up until now to release a 3G/HSDPA cellphone for use in the US. Rather than pick some brash smartphone to break that fast, they’ve picked the Z750a clamshell, available exclusively on AT&T. While the downlink speeds of up to 1,400kbps are the headline feature, the 2-megapixel camera, full HTML browser and A2DP stereo Bluetooth make for a decent package overall; the only drawback seems to be the Memory Stick Micro card slot rather than the more common microSD, which you’ll likely be making use of since the Z750a only has 26MB of internal memory.

Still, you can’t argue with the price: $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and assuming you’ll sign a two-year contract. The Z750a will be available in early April 2008.

It’s a slight misconception that SE hasn’t released any 3G phones for the US. The K850i is 3G/HSDPA and has been available for a little while, however it is only through Sony and through importers. AT&T just cancelled their release of that phone, which is a huge disservice to US cell customers, I think.
