If the rest of Sony Ericsson’s new handset range are all vaguely niche, the Z770 clamshell is determinedly straightforward. That’s not to say that it lacks functionality, however; UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900 make for speedy browsing and an ideal candidate for laptop tethering, while support for push-email via Microsoft Exchange should see business users content. A mobile-browser, RSS client and weather forecast app all make use of the internet access, as does the preloaded Google Maps for Mobile.

Sony Ericsson are promising 8.5hrs talktime from a single charge and a newly straightforward browser; the “Magnetic Mouse” pointer jumps intelligently from text box to link to image, making the most of the 2.2-inch display. RSS widgets can be placed directly on the idle-screen, and the camera set to automatically upload new images to a blog or online gallery.

The Sony Ericsson Z770 will be available from Q2 2008, and we’ll have photos of the clamshell in action later on today.
