Sony Ericsson’s Z770i HSDPA clamshell was pushed out of the limelight back at the Mobile World Congress by the XPERIA X1, but if MobileArsenal’s review is anything to go by it’s been unfairly forgotten. Testing out a pre-production version (that still bears the SE123 model code), they found that while the Z770i might not bring anything massively new or creative to the table, it’s still a decent handset from the company. Particularly of note is the Access NetFront-based browser SE install, and the restrained chassis design.

Of course, nothing is perfect and there are still a few drawbacks to the Z770i. While the photogenic keypad might actually be surprisingly straightforward to use, the knife-thin navigation keys are certainly a case of form over function. There’s no internal camera for video calls (not that it’s a much-used feature), and no GPS either; what you do get is a crisp, clear screen, USB 2.0 and Bluetooth for tethering to a laptop, and decent build quality. Sony Ericsson initially said Q2 2008 for release of the Z770i; they’re yet to suggest pricing.
