After looking at On2’s new 1080p HD-capable mobile video chipset yesterday, today there’s word that the company has licenced one of their software decoder solutions to Sony for their latest WiFi communicator. The TrueMotion VP6 video decoder will power the Flash Lite 3 functionality in the new Mylo 2, Sony’s IM, VoIP and internet device, ensuring compatibility with streaming web video such as YouTube and Google Video.

“We continue to improve the quality of our video solutions for leading handheld device manufacturers, and the mylo communicator is one of the best examples of mobile video products on the market today. Most of the leading user-generated content web sites today use our Flix Engine product and VP6 compression scheme to create and publish video, and we see the market trends moving toward mobile video sharing and consumption” Bill Joll, president and CEO, On2 Technologies
Apparently the On2 Flix Engine is the video processing application often used to convert video files into streaming Flash-based video, with customers including Adobe, AOL, Skype, VideoEgg and Nokia.

Both YouTube and Google Video use older Flash codecs in their video (Sorenson Spark), not On2’s… So this part of the story does not follow.
That’s an interesting point, Roger. I’ve just looked back through the press release I got sent, and it seems slightly different to that on the On2 site – one mentions YouTube by name, the other just says “Web 2.0 sites”. I’ll look into it and see which is the correct version.
Thanks for flagging it up!
Not sure what the issue is – according to the press release:
“On2 have just announced the Hantro 8190, a multi-format hardware RTL video decoder that can handle 1080p high-definition video at 30fps as well as H.263, H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VC-1, Sorenson Spark and VP6 formats together with still images of up to 16-megapixels.”
Sorensen Spark included in the above. The Hantro 8190 seems to be the one stop solution for all consumer mobile video devices.
Cheers,
JB
JB, the Mylo 2 isn’t actually using the Hantro 8190, they’ve picked one of On2’s software decoders (the TrueMotion VP6). That is, presumably, compatible with Sorensen Spark too as the Mylo 2 will display YouTube videos.
OK – thanks for the clarification.
Regards,
JB
This is all a little too confusing.
The clarification is simple. Mylo is using Flash Lite 3. And just like regular Flash (v. 8/9), Flash Lite 3 is an Adobe product with both the Sorenson and On2 video codecs.
So yes, YouTube will run on the Mylo – but that’s only because FL3 includes Sorenson Spark. That aspect has nothing to do with On2 or Hantro, so your title and content are misleading.
Hope this clears things up.
Roger – BZZZZZZZT – you must work for all the people shorting ONT stock these days. .. your post is total rubbish.
On2’s VP6 is the codec in Flash Lite 3 and Sony licensed the DECODER from On2 – it has nothing to do with Sorenson – but keep up the good work trying to deceive people about all the deals On2 is writing . . you won’t succeed in lying to people but thanks for your post. Anyone with a brain knows On2 is licensing its codecs and some big business is very worried about their end around play in the space – On2 = Goldmine for investors — SONY licenses On2 is all you need to know . . then plug in TI, NXP, Freescale, Unilever etc. and you see why posers like you are on this message board trying to keep people from discovering On2 -
Do a google search with MYLO2 ON2. Truth always prevails Roger.
hey does anyone know if the sony mylo will work with the MiFi 2200?
