Sprint will apparently be axing their long held voice command service on July 1st. What a sad day for Sprint subscribers. I remember back in the day when this was brand new; then you had to manually train a phone for voice command functions. Then Sprint began offering the service. Looking down at the * key of my phone reminds me of the times I used the service. A small memento of simpler times.

Unfortunately, this is not a rumor, leak, or any other sort of non credible news. This comes straight from Sprint’s website. In light of the fact that most modern phones support some sort of built in voice services, especially Samsung, Motorola, and BlackBerry devices, this news is not too surprising. The solution Sprint gives for devices not capable of voice functions, is upgrade.
Sprint reminds you that since the service will no longer be able to be used past July first, that you should take steps to ensure that your contacts are not lost. They recommend that you download and print your contacts out, so that you can add them to your phone to avoid any inconvenience.

This is a terrific service and I am very sorry to see it go away.
Benefits:
1 – Holds up to 500 contacts and 5 numbers for each
2 – Easy dialing hit * and then the talk button
3 – If you lose your telephone, the numbers are still there
4 – Very easy to upload and manage numbers
At $5.00 per month it is worth every penny.

Unfortunately, its leave a lot of blind, elderly and disabled users–and those who would help them, in trouble:

Sprint had offered these folks the service for free, but truly may have forgotten. Sad.
