Whether WiMAX has had a successful showing at CTIA is the subject of some debate, but the hardware rolled out by Nokia, Samsung and Everex (among others) has at least made the mobile broadband technology seem more of a real prospect than before. Disappointing, then, that the whole thing should be let down by Sprint themselves: according to a company spokesman, the Xohm WiMAX service will have its commercial launch delayed until later in the year, with the rumor-mills at CTIA pegging it for a Summer release. Sprint had originally intended Xohm to launch this month, after trials of the service in Chicago, Baltimore and Washington D.C.
“The delay of Xohm’s commercial launch is a major blow for Sprint, and the storm clouds are only getting darker over the entire WiMAX sector” Clint Wheelock, chief research officer, ABI Research
According to Sprint spokesman James Fisher, the Xohm trials have been successful and the delay in expanding the service is down to the carrier ensuring the eventual launch “meets our expectation” rather than any issue with the hardware involved.
