Sprint’s ROM update for the HTC Mogul finally brought official GPS and EV-DO Rev.A to the smartphone, and Geek.com’s Joel Evans decided to take the upgraded handset for a real-world test that would use both aspects of its new functionality: navigation with Google Maps for Mobile. The download of the software itself took less than a minute (GMM is 1MB in size) and the Mogul was able to pinpoint Joel’s indoor position even down to whereabouts in the house he was sitting.

Outside, that GPS accuracy worked in tandem with the improved download speeds, with Google Maps grabbing the satellite imagery of his car quickly enough to show real-time lane changes and junction navigation. In fact, the Mogul’s future as a standalone satnav replacement seems only hampered by Google’s software, which doesn’t automatically move between direction prompts.
It’s nice to see an free update with no drawbacks; if you’re a Sprint Mogul user and you’re yet to upgrade, the instructions are here.
