STMicroelectronics announces new IC for music phones

Inside the slick exterior of our mobile phones lies a number of integrated circuits and other electronic components. The quality of these internal components has to do with how well the phone functions for calls and music playback.

STMicroelectroncis has announced a new IC that it has developed for use in mobile phones that are music oriented. The IC is called the EMIF04-EAR02M8 and measures in at a small 1.5 x 1.7mm. The IC can replace several components or two separate ICs that are typically integrated into the phones music headset connection circuitry.

The new design saves as much as 72% of the typical board space needed for these applications. The IC provides circuits optimized for both earphone and microphone connections. The IC also offers attenuation of signals at frequencies of 900MHz to 1900MHz. The smaller package will allow phone designers to develop smaller mobile devices.
