According to the latest rumor, T-Mobile USA will be launching their 3G UMTS network in New York City tomorrow, May 1st.  According to a document claimed to be from the carrier themselves, NYC will be the first of over twenty cities to be 3G-enabled by the end of the year.  Those locations are apparently the same as the twenty-four tipped in the last round of 3G rumors two weeks ago, with the exception of New Jersey and Long Island.

What’s particularly interesting is that the document fails to mention high-speed data access via UMTS.  It’s believed that, rather than market the service as a faster way to access the internet on a mobile device, T-Mobile will initially use the network to expand voice capacity.

T-Mobile is yet to officially comment on the rumors, nor confirm the launch date for their service.  It was initially suggested that the announcement would be released sometime last week.  The carrier already has four 3G-capable handsets.
