T-Mobile officially announced their G1 smartphone this morning, the first handset to use Google’s Android platform.  The G1 is a dualband UMTS, quadband GSM slider with a full QWERTY keyboard, trackball and 3.2-inch 320 x 480 HVGA capacitive touchscreen for navigation; it also has GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and a 3.2-megapixel fixed-focus camera.  Our sibling site Android Community were on hand to get some hands-on pictures and video.

G1 talktime is estimated at up to 350 minutes WCDMA or 406 minutes GSM; standby at 402hrs or 319hrs for WCDMA or GSM respectively.  The battery, unlike that of the iPhone, is removable.  However HTC have used their own mini-USB connection rather than giving a normal 3.5mm headphone socket, so you’ll need an adapter (apparently not supplied in the box as standard) if you want to use your own cans.  Internal memory is a mere 256MB ROM and 192MB RAM: all storage is via microSD, with a 1GB card included and up to 8GB supported.

Vincent also just-so-happened to have an array of other cellphones in his bag, hence this group shot of, from left to right, the Apple iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, BlackBerry Bold and Samsung Instinct.  The G1 is narrower than all of them, but longer and certainly thicker.

The T-Mobile G1 will be priced from $179 with a new two-year contract.  Two new data plans are on offer, in addition to your normal voice plans: one, for $25, offers unlimited data and a set amount of bundled messages, while for $35 you get unlimited data and messages.  However T-Mobile don’t seem keen to stress out their new 3G network - the data cap is apparently a mere 1GB.  The G1 will be available on October 22nd.

There’s masses more Android and G1 related content - plus a thriving user forum - over at Android Community, so if you’re at all curious about Google’s mobile platform then check it out!

I am a tmobile customer, I’m happy that there is finally a new phone coming to tmobile &definitely would try this phone out but i’m still disappointed in the specs of where phones should be at, at this point in technology. No wonder the US falls short, it’s all about marketing, just another buyer/consumer rant. Be a proud American of consumerism…. no wonder Japan &other countries far exceed their technology and phones as we lack them… while we just make new phones which have poor specs and usually don’t change much when a newer version comes out. It disappoints me how much better this phone can be, the interface is nothing compared to the iPhone i’ll give you that, thought it could be much better, even the HTC touch pro & HTC diamond that was picked up by sprint has a much nicer interface. This phone still has a keyboard, no touch keyboard. There’s still no video! Surprisingly theres NO windows mobile on here, might be a problem &can fall short because of that. The design is decent but the little curve at the end makes it pointless? HTC &google just trying to switch things up? Lets not copy the iPhone and curve it on the end? Disappointing, it might as well just be solid flat. It’s a bummer that phones can’t even have the great basic components. Such as good picture quality, atleast by now video, flash, a sleeker design, advanced graphics with a newer GUI, copy, paste, select, forward, voice-dialing, etc. This phones mainly just for the “new” tmobile 3G network and just helps Google expand, considering you need a “google” account and the phones main deal is pretty much using the internet on the new network. All the things you can do with the faster 3G internet. PUT BETTER SPECS!
