The 4G train is chugging along very nicely by now, with yet another carrier announcing intentions to commit to LTE as their 4G technology. UK wireless regulator Ofcom has announced their single largest release of spectrum to date, the 2010-2025MHz and 2500-2690MHz bands (known as 2.6 GHz), which it claims are ideal for "high-speed, high-capacity mobile data connections enabling the delivery of advanced mobile services using technologies such as WiMAX or evolutions of 3G technology." Unlike the FCC's recent 700MHz auction, Ofcom will be ...

As the hammer came down on the FCC's 700MHz spectrum auction last month, winners (and losers) were forced to be coy about their plans under the Commission's anti-collusion rules. That ban on discussion ended late yesterday, and various key players in the proceedings have stepped up to give their version of events. As expected, Verizon and AT&T have been crowing ...

Just when you thought the 7.2Mbps downlink speeds of HSDPA (which are usually only available in limited number of urban areas) was impressive, NTT DoCoMo have revealed that they've recorded a 250Mbps downlink using the new Super 3G technology they've been trialing in Yokosuka, Japan since February. Super 3G, which is also known as LTE (Long Term Evolution), has been in theory ...

Qualcomm may have been pushing their own 4G cellular broadband technology, UMB, but with takers in short supply they were also doing a healthy turn of business with WiMAX silicon. Now they've surprised everyone (except those who realise that the potential to make money will overrule any tech loyalty) by announcing new chipset roadmaps that include Long Term Evolution (LTE), another ...
