Thanks to a deal with voice-control specialists Nuance, Palm smartphones running the homegrown Palm OS will be able to respond to vocal commands such as contact name or digit dialling, message addressing for picture, text or email messages, and running apps or choosing menu options.  It's all down to Nuance's VSuite, which will be preloaded onto the AT&T Centro and ... continued »

Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless have launched a new mobile ticket service that allows you not only to buy entry to concerts via your cellphone but to use the handset itself as the ticket.  Dubbed "Wireless Box Office", the system is a partnership with Live Nation and, at first, will be active with selected concerts over the Summer.   continued »

PHONE Magazine Week in Review

Posted on 16 March 2008 by Chris Davies

It's been quite the week of rumor and speculation, with new handsets, government arguments and price speculation all churning through the cellular rumor-mill.  On the handset front, Verizon's ridiculously-named U940 'Glyde' - the CDMA version of the F700 slider-smartphone - showed up in its clearest pre-announcement photoshoot yet, complete with shots of the new interface.  Meanwhile, another Verizon smartphone blessed ... continued »

Posted on 14 March 2008 by Chris Davies

Engadget have a managed to score some pre-announcement shots of the enV2 - aka the LG VX9100, which we first saw back on Valentine's day - showing the clamshell messenger in its black and maroon glory.  Exact specs are still unconfirmed, but the handset is sporting a USB socket (in either mini or micro format) which suggests they've moved to generic connections ... continued »

Indian Government denies RIM BlackBerry threat

Posted on 14 March 2008 by Chris Davies

After fears earlier this week that the Indian Department of Telecommunications would cut off BlackBerry push-email servers in the country over RIM's refusal to hand over decryption algorithms, Telecoms Secretary Siddhartha Behura has now made clear that the Indian government is not considering pulling the plug on the service.  Confirming that the ministry is "very keen" that RIM's service continue, ... continued »

AT&T BlackBerry Pearl 8120 launched: GPS dropped for WiFi

Posted on 13 March 2008 by Chris Davies

It hardly seems worth announcing yet another variant of the BlackBerry Pearl - seriously, is there a carrier left without one in its catalogue? - but AT&T's at least has the honour of being the first US GSM version of their latest update.  The 8120 is the GSM version of the Pearl 8130 available from Verizon Wireless, and AT&T have ... continued »

AT&T American Idol Framerz: carrier cashes in on composites

Posted on 11 March 2008 by Chris Davies

Rather foolishly, I thought Verizon's Car and Driver SlideShow would take the prize for "most ridiculous image-based cellphone application" today - after all, charging $4.49 a month for a hundred photos of cars on your cellphone is really milking the idea of mobile content - but that's before I saw AT&T's American Idol Framerz.  For a mere $0.99 you can send a ... continued »

Posted on 06 March 2008 by Chris Davies

According to research by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), navigation, email and internet access are top of the feature must-haves for new cellphone purchases today.  In fact, they believe that the demand for advanced functionality will drive more buyers to choose smartphones over more traditional handsets; CEA estimates that sales of smartphones accounted for 15-percent of total units shipped in 2007, ... continued »

RIM pull HTML email from upcoming BlackBerry update

Posted on 05 March 2008 by Chris Davies

Could support for HTML email have been removed from the upcoming BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 SP5?  That's the suspicion at the moment; rendering HTML and rich-text messages has become one of the most keenly anticipated features of the update, but the official RIM "What's New" page for SP5 has been edited to remove any mention of the feature.  RIM are ... continued »
