Windows Mobile 7: rumors, leaks & frustrated expectations

Posted on 21 April 2008 by Chris Davies

It almost seems too blasé to say that a lot rests on the success of Windows Mobile 7. The update to the smartphone OS has been a long time in development and, going by appearances and what rumors we have, has some time left to go before it's fit for release. WM7 won't get out of the door ... continued »

PHONE Magazine Week in Review

Posted on 20 April 2008 by Chris Davies

It's been blame, buy-outs and goodbyes this week, as the great & good (as well as the not-so-great) reshuffle in an increasingly competitive mobile market.  Microsoft's finalising of their Danger deal ended with the software giant declaring they'd make Windows Mobile "fun", words even less comfortable with each other than Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston locked in a bathysphere.  Meanwhile ... continued »

Could Yahoo! & Microsoft collaborate on a RIM-rivalling Y!Phone?

Posted on 15 April 2008 by Chris Davies

Now before you get excited/start vomiting, this is just a concept of what a Windows Mobile based Yahoo!fone might look like; the really interesting part is the idea of a collaboration between the two companies based not on Microsoft buying Yahoo! but the search and content company working with Seattle to rival Google's Android.  ZDNet's Jason Perlow is surprisingly keen on ... continued »

If you're nowhere near one of the twelve pilot AT&T stores getting Microsoft's nifty Surface touchscreen-table, you may be left wondering what all the fuss is about.  Neither AT&T nor Microsoft want that, so they'd like you to take a look at the Atlanta store, previewed in this video, and see how surprisingly bemused customers can be readily educated by earnest-looking salespeople.  Surface is ... continued »

Microsoft's deal with AT&T to put the Surface touchscreen-table into select stores has had a mixed reaction, usually with a fair amount of iPhone-related teasing mixed in, so we dispatched Vincent to check out the multitouch marvel and give his honest opinion: useful selling tool or just storefront bling?  We've got three exclusive videos of the AT&T Surface and a gallery ... continued »

Nestled in among Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 announcement was word that they've also been fettling Mobile Internet Explorer; the browser, which used to be the weak link in the smartphone OS, has been updated to support H.264, Flash and Silverlight content, as well as full-screen viewing options.  Vincent stopped by the Microsoft stand at CTIA to snap some hands-on photos of ... continued »
