Posted on 19 March 2008 by Chris Davies

The FCC have ruled on an ongoing investigation into exclusive telephone agreements in apartment buildings, judging that the existing practise of landlords entering into limiting contracts with individual telcos is contrary to the consumer's best interest and, as such, is being banned.  Exclusivity contracts had been seen as a money spinner for landlords and developers, promising clients to the phone companies for ... continued »

Nokia Pangea Day video contest plugs Ovi media sharing site

Posted on 19 March 2008 by Chris Davies

To a customs worker, Pangea - the hypothetical unified landmass that existed 200-300 million years ago, when all the continents were connected - is a logistical nightmare; to Nokia, it's an opportunity to plug their Ovi media sharing community.  Pangea Day is the brainchild of Jehane Noujaim, who won the 2006 TED Prize, where we're encouraged to consider life from ... continued »

Adobe working on iPhone Flash player after Jobs rebuke

Posted on 19 March 2008 by Chris Davies

It looks like Steve Jobs sharp criticism of Adobe's mobile Flash offering was enough to send them scurrying off to download the iPhone SDK.  The Wall Street Journal [subscription required] is reporting that Adobe have been examining the public release of the developer's package, and are considering creating a special iPhone version of the Flash player. Perhaps recognising that it's faintly ridiculous to licence a rival's media streaming technology when you have your own sitting back at the lab, Microsoft have finally got around to announcing an availability date for the Windows Mobile version of Silverlight.  From Q2 this year, developers will be able to get their coding hands on Silverlight 1.0 for Mobile, supporting animation, ... continued »

The European Commission has attempted to streamline the roll-out of mobile TV by backing the DVB-H standard; however while this might be good news to Nokia, who were petitioning for DVB-H, some operators are accusing the Union of deciding too quickly.  EU member states will now be required to "encourage" the use of DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld) in new ... continued »
