Nokia has been working on its answer to the iPhone for quite some time now. We saw a preview of the S60 Touch interface in August of 2007, and we have been waiting for more details since. Nokia didn't exactly let the cat out of the bag the other day when they mentioned the upcoming touchscreen 'Tube' smartphone - since last year there have been images and talk of the first handset that the new S60 Touch OS will feature on - but it was enough to provoke Symbian Freak into spilling what they know about the device. ...

One of the most disappointing announcements at the Mobile World Congress, to my mind, was Nokia's S60 Touch platform. Having seen the preview videos from several months ago, suggesting an iPhone-rival handset, I was expecting a strong showing intended to cement S60's position as the most implemented smartphone OS. According to Czech site Mobile.cz, this poorly-photographed cellphone is in fact the Motorola Z12 ZiNe. Pictured next to predecessors the Z8 and Z10 (you can see the full picture after the cut), the handset appears to have a larger display and touchscreen controls, and looks to be running the same Symbian UIQ OS.

According to Nokia's official 'See Into S60' blog, the company will be showing their new Touch UI interface at the Mobile World Congress (formerly called 3GSM) trade show in Barcelona this month. Touch UI is the Finnish company's retort to Apple's iPhone, a touchscreen and gesture-based update to the venerable S60 OS that includes Haptikos haptic feedback.
