Toshiba has launched a new smartphone in Japan called the T-01A that is the first mobile device to use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The CPU is an ARM-based unit that runs at 1GHz, the iPhone Arm-based CPU runs at a mere 600MHz for comparison.

Qualcomm has announced a new addition to its line of Snapdragon chipsets. The new chipset promises to improve the performance of smartphones and improve the battery life as well as enhancing both 2D and 3D graphics.

HTC is expected to launch Qualcomm Snapdragon-based mobile devices in the second quarter of 2009, DigiTimes reported. HTC will deliver its Snapdragon-based devices one quarter later than Toshiba's early-February unveiling of its TG01 smartphone, which also runs on the Snapdragon platform.

Toshiba just announced the TG01, a 9.9mm thick Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone, featuring their own 3D user interface. It has a 4.1-inch WVGA 800 x 480 384k pixel resistive touchscreen, 3G HSPA, WiFi, GPS and A-GPS. TG01 is Toshiba's first device to use Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD2850 chipset.
