Of the two 4G mobile services, WiMAX is the less interesting of the two to me. I am more interested in LTE for its faster speeds. That said, there is no denying the appeal of a 4G system now like WiMax is offering, even if it's only available in limited areas.

I would really like to be able to watch some TV on my iPhone while I sit in the line waiting for my kids to come out of school. Users of Comcast cable may be able to watch their favorite TV shows on their mobile phones one day.

Clearwire has been busy rolling out its 4G WiMax network in a few locations around the country. Its partner Sprint has several other 4G installations in place as well. Clearwire announced today that it has added ten new locations to its 4G network.

Sprint and Clearwire have been working together to roll WiMax service out across the country. The roll out has been very slow so far and only a few of the largest cities in the country have access to WiMax service at this point.

The prospects of 4G networks coming late this year and early next year is enough to make a mobile geek smile. The WiMax reality will quickly wipe that smile away with the service in the U.S. available in very limited areas.

It always seems that new technologies end up fighting it out in a format war. We first saw it in the VHS versus Betamax war. Then we saw the Blu-ray versus HD DVD fight, and now we have a war brewing between WiMax and LTE to become the 4G mobile data service of choice.

Nokia has discontinued its N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition, MobileBurn reports, due to "the slow WiMAX roll out in the USA." So far, there are two WiMAX markets in USA: Sprint launched XOHM mobile broadband commercial service in Baltimore last September, while Clearwire has just launched its WiMAX service in Portland.
